Set-up of Card Verification Value/Code Besides card number and expiry date, most payment cards have three control ciphers that can be used to more safely identify who is making the payment. (The control ciphers also go by the names of: CVC - Card Verification Code, or CVV - Card Verification Value).
The added security stems from the fact that the control ciphers, as opposed to card number and expiry date, cannot be found anywhere else than on the card. In other words, they are only visible if you are in possession of the card itself. You find the control ciphers in the signature box at the back of the card right after the card number.
DIBS have different ways of responding to the use or the lack hereof. These are:
1. Always demand control ciphers
DIBS will reject (reason=9) all payments without control ciphers. These payments will not be passed on to the acquirer.
2. Never demand control ciphers (standard set-up)
DIBS passes on card information without paying attention to whether or not the control ciphers are included.
3. Demand control ciphers when the amount exceeds x
DIBS turns down a payment (reason=9) a payment if it’s bigger than the stated amount and does not carry control ciphers.
